I am often puzzled when I hear people reacting to comments made about them and incidents which may follow often resulting in fights, brawls, arguments, you name it. Why does it matter what other people think of you. Isn’t it more important what you think of yourself? There are many people in this world and it is inevitable that there will be some who feel the need to share their opinions even when unsolicited. While those comments may hurt, you should focus on what you think of yourself rather than what others think of you. After all you know yourself more than they do. The most important question you must ask yourself is, how did this person get your information in order to make these comments? Did you invite it? Did you share this information? Did someone you entrusted this information to share it with others? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions then you need to evaluate yourself and your need to share personal information.
Before you share your information, ask yourself these questions first:
1. Can I trust this person to keep my information to themselves?
2. Has this person ever told me anything about someone else’s personal information?
3. Do I really need to share this information?
4. Would it better to write this information down in a journal?
5. If this information is repeated to me by another person would it hurt me?
It may be hard to keep things to yourself but consider the negative consequences that may follow. I personally keep my information to myself as I am extremely private. I don’t believe in giving anyone information to harm me. Ultimately you may not be able to exercise total control over information about yourself but to the extent that you can, I suggest you do.
